Berlakovich recalled that he had arrived in Croatia as
ambassador in the difficult days of Yugoslav aggression.
The Aggressor's intentions had gone so far so that General
Raseta had said that he would destroy the Zagreb Cathedral,
Berlakovich said, adding that his greatest satisfaction in life had
been to see the reconstruction of the independent state of Croatia.
He stressed that this would not have been possible without
President Tudjman.
"Your ancestors had to leave the Croatian homeland in times of
the Osman aggression, and you came to Croatia as Ambassador of
Austria, a state which, before others, realized the meaning and
justice of the request of the Croatian people to have an
independent state," Tudjman said, thanking Berlakovich for
successfully fulfilling his duties and for bringing Croatia and
Austrian closer together.
Austrian Ambassador to Croatia Berlakovich was also later
received by Croatian Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa.
