DUBROVNIK, 28 Sept (Hina) - The 9th world match-race championship, which had been held from 19 to 29 September in Dubrovnik under the auspices of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, was officially closed in the Croatia hotel in Cavtat
tonight.

which had been held from 19 to 29 September in Dubrovnik under the
auspices of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, was officially
closed in the Croatia hotel in Cavtat tonight. #L#
President Tudjman, who attended the closing ceremony, handed
over the winner's cup to the new world match-race champion, a New
Zealander Russel Coutts.
Tudjman stressed the importance of the event and called on all
participants to visit Croatia again, as competitors or tourists.
After he congratulated to all competitors for their
participation in the championship, Tudjman proclaimed the 9th world
match-race championship closed.
Dubrovnik County Prefect Jure Buric handed over the second
place award to Ed Baird (U.S.A.), while Dubrovnik Mayor Nikola
Obuljen handed over the third place award to Australia's Peter
Gilmour.
The gathered at the closing ceremony were also addressed by
Brian Billings, president of the International Match Race
Association, who thanked the organizers of the event, for, as he
said, the best organized match-race championship ever.
