Attacks on Dubrovnik area were launched from sea, land and
air. Power supply to the area was cut off, and after enemy planes
shelled the telecommunication equipment on the hill of Srdj,
overlooking the city, Dubrovnik was cut off from the rest of the
world.
During the aggression, more than 300 soldiers and civilians
were killed, a large number of people were wounded, 33,000 persons
were forced to leave their homes, more than 2,500 houses in
Dubrovnik area were burnt down and 336 persons were imprisoned in
the prison camps in Morinja and Bileca in Serbia and Montenegro.
December 6 of 1991 was the worst day of the Serbian occupation
of the city. The aggressor shelled the city and its historical
nucleus from sea and land the whole day. The enemy's efforts failed
thanks to Dubrovnik defenders. Today, St Nicholas' Day is
celebrated as the Day of Dubrovnik Defenders.
