BELGRADE, August 4 (Hina) - UNTAES Temporary Administrator General
Jacques Klein on Saturday took part for the first time in the work
of the "parliament" of local Serbs in Vukovar. According to
Belgrade's Radio B92, Klein said that he would forward the Local
Serbs' demand for the extension of UNTAES' mandate in the Danubian
area to the Security Council.
Klein said that the U.N. Mission cost USD 300 million yearly
and that the final word on it was up to the Security Council, which
took the progress in the Mission as the basic precondition for its
decision.
Speaking about elections, Klein said that the precondition for
them was a good-quality Croatian Amnesty Law and the solution to
the issue of documents.
According to Radio B92, Klein said that the local Serbs'
aspirations towards autonomy were unreal, adding that work should
be directed towards autonomy in education and the right to language
and alphabet.
Belgrade did not want new refugees, Klein said, adding that
all vital problems as regarded the region would be discussed with
Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic in the Serbian capital.
Klein told representatives of the local Serbs' "parliament"
that money was a serious problem to a lasting realization of the
U.N. Mission and that apart from promises, there were no concrete
signs towards improvement.
