Other countries in this group include Albania, Bulgaria,
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Rumania, Slovakia and the
Ukraine.
US support to Croatia was made conditional upon the full
observance of the Dayton Agreements and achieving significant
progress toward the establishment of democratic institutions, the
rule of law and the free market. The bill acknowledged Croatia's
contribution to NATO and other peace efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Senate also granted US$ 60 million in assistance to
countries making the transition to NATO membership.
The bill singled out Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and the Czech
Republic as qualifying for this aid, describing them as nations
that "have made the most headway to meeting membership criteria."
