IFOR HAS NO INFORMATION ON ADMIRAL SMITH'S RESIGNATION

SARAJEVO, 6 June (Hina) - IFOR chief commander Admiral Leighton Smith was performing his duties regularly and so far, there was no confirmation of the reports on his resignation. 'We have no information whatsoever on Admiral Smith's resignation. We heard rumours and are so far treating them as such. Admiral Smith will continue to perform his duties and he will meet Croatian President Tudjman as IFOR chief commander', liaison officer of the U.S. force in the IFOR headquarters in Sarajevo, Major Jerry Ranne, told the Croatian news agency Hina on Thursday. Citing a statement by a Pentagon official, France Presse news agency said that Admiral Leighton Smith had resigned from his office and that he would be replaced by Vice-Admiral Joseph Lopez. Officials in the NATO headquarters in Brussels could neither confirm nor deny the reports. 'There are no indications that Admiral Smith has resigned from his office', a NATO command spokesman in Mons said. (hina) rm mm 061908 MET jun 96
