ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - The House of Representatives of the
Croatian Parliament on Thursday concluded a discussion on a Bill on
Education in Languages of Ethnic and National Unions or Minorities.

The bill refers to the establishment of schools in which
education would be conducted in the language of the national
minority, to syllabuses, enrollment conditions, the choice of
teachers and ways of financing such schools.
During the discussion, opposition representatives, mainly
those from Istria, made several remarks regarding the bill.
Most remarks focused on articles 10 and 14, which stipulate
that only Croatian citizens who consider themselves minorities'
members can attend the above mentioned schools, and that only
minorities' members can work in them, apart from Croatian language
teachers.
Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Assembly said that the
bill had been proposed only due to the situation in the Istria
County (where most Italian minority members live), adding that the
essence of the bill was to diminish the number of minorities'
schools.
Several representatives proposed that minorities' issues be
solved by signing reciprocal agreements between Croatia and the
countries from which the minorities come.
