ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - Croatian Political Prisoners' Society on
Saturday issued a statement to say that they were bitter and
surprised at the refusal of Croatia's admittance into the
democratic system of European countries. #L#
"The indefinite testing of our country and its democratic
standards, scrutinized under a fine microscope of some European
countries, makes our country and its citizens doubt in friendly
approach and in the consistency of criteria," the statement said.
The latest motive for this doubt was the decision of the
Council of Ministers to postpone Croatia's accession into the
Council of Europe, the statement said.
"Us, former prisoners, who have experienced injustice,
probably without precedent in human history, cannot believe that
Europe - which was an example of justice to us during our term of
imprisonment, a Europe which was the highest goal of our
aspirations for freedom - is showing itself in utter ruthlessness,
without a trace of feeling for values which it was proud of itself
and which we trusted," the statement said, asking, "Cannot the
Council of Ministers make the distinction between Croatia as victim
and Serbia as aggressor?.
