CONF $ ERENCE ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - A two-day round-table conference between the representatives of the Croatian government and the "Economist", which encompassed more than 120 representatives of western corporations, on Friday finished its work. The conference which took place behind closed doors was opened by Croatian Premier Zlatko Matesa and was concluded with a news conference. #L# Deputy president of "The Economist Conferences" William Crisp said that they had had a chance to meet highest Croatian government officials and obtain answers to numerous questions - from taxes and banking to the situation in privatization and possibilities for foreign investments. Deputy president of one of the organizers of the conference, Creditanstalt, Gabriel Delacher, said that it had been clearly stated that foreign investors were welcome in Croatia and that, due to significantly reduced risk, a large increase in the number of investors was registered. If this continued and with a good infrastructure, Zagreb could become a financial centre for the development of the whole region, Delacher said. Creditanstalt is to get more involved into the Croatian financial and economic system by the end of the year and with the inflow of capital, an advisory and other services would be established. The company's representative office was opened in Zagreb on May 1. Head of the 'Price Waterhouse' representative office in Zagreb, Tanja Rukavina, said it was important that a variety of possibilities of cooperation exist, as well as the fact that foreign investors could trust Croatian accounting standards which were no different from international standards. The round table conference with the Croatian government is one in a line of conferences organized by the "Economist" in this part of Europe. Similar conferences were held last year in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, and the organizers announced another in Croatia in 15 months. (hina) lm jn 171758 MET may 96
