A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON THURSDAY

ZAGREB, 16 May (Hina) - Ivan Sabic writes in today's 'VJESNIK' about the future of the agreement on the army of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, signed at a meeting of the Forum for the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina on 14 May in Washington. An agreement on the army is still a long way off, but if the federal partners adopt a law on the federal army by the end of this month, they will make at least one step forward. 'State Must Give Up Oppression' reads the headline of a text on an action of Croatian journalists aimed at checking the constitutionality of changes to Croatia's Penal code. Mostar elections are dealt with in a text headlined 'Party of Women - Muslim Election Catch?'. 'VECERNJI LIST' brings an interview with Croatian Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Simonovic. In the interview, headlined 'It's Time For More Action', Simonovic says that the policy of small steps in the relations between Belgrade and Zagreb has yielded good results. Further strategic efforts will be directed towards full normalisation of relations, that is, towards the establishment of diplomatic relations, he says. 'I have warned the Belgrade side that we have to take care of two issues....The finding out of the truth about the missing persons after the return of displaced people to the Croatian Danubian area would only have a negative effect on the process of peaceful reintegration. Mr Milutinovic (Yugoslav Foreign Minister) has agreed with that and promised that he would personally take care that the problem be solved'. The second issue is the southern Croatian peninsula of Prevlaka. 'We have always stressed, and we made it clear to the Serbian leadership in Belgrade during out latest meeting, that we are ready to negotiate the demilitarization of the peninsula, but Croatia's sovereignty and territorial changes are issues we will not discuss. 'Vecernji list' also brings an article on the attacks on the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Franjo Kuharic, and speculations about his successor. (hina) rm mm 161117 MET may 96
