After talks with Sir Arthur Watts, head of the group for the
succession to the former Yugoslavia, Marendic said that Watts had
decided to begin his service by meeting separately delegations from
successors. Watts had already talked with delegations from
Macedonia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, and would meet
a delegation from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia next week,
Marendic said.
"We told Watts that the reason why the process of succession
is taking so long was Yugoslavia's stance. Yugoslavia is not only
against the succession - through its proposals and documents, it
also accuses other states of having forcibly and illegaly seceded
from the former Yugoslavia, thus inflicting severe damage on it.
According to the Yugoslav authorities, other successors should
compensate Yugoslavia for that damage", Marendic said.
He stressed that Watts' commission would not be able to carry
out its duties without difficulties unless pressure was exerted on
Belgrade.
It had been agreed that Watts would visit all successors
between May 25 and June 5, Marendic concluded.
