SOCIAL LIBERAL DRAZEN BUDISA ELECTED MAYOR OF ZAGREB

ZAGREB, March 21 (Hina) - The Zagreb City Assembly on Thursday voted no confidence in Marina Matulovic Dropulic, named mayor of Zagreb by President Franjo Tudjman, and elected Drazen Budisa of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) a new mayor. Thirty-one councillors voted in favour while 10 councillors of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) voted against. The Assembly also elected two deputy mayors: Vesna Vesligaj of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 31 votes in favour, 11 against and one abstention, and Matija Ocic of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) with 31 votes in favour and 12 against. Budisa said there was still the possibility of resolving "the abnormal situation" concerning the election of the Zagreb mayor in a democratic way. Noting that his election as the mayor of Zagreb came at the time when Croatia was recommended for admission to full membership of the Council of Europe, Budisa called on President Franjo Tudjman to confirm his election so that "the handover of authority in Zagreb could be conducted in a democratic way." Congratulating Budisa on being elected a new mayor, City Assembly president Zdravko Tomac of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that Budisa was the last mayoral candidate proposed by the current Assembly. "Thus we give the opportunity for the handover of power in Zagreb to be carried out in a civilized and democratic way on the basis of election results," Tomac said. Budisa was the fourth mayor to be elected by the Zagreb City Assembly where the alliance of seven opposition parties had a majority. President Tudjman had previously refused to confirm three mayoral candidates proposed by the opposition and had appointed Dropulic instead. But for the second time the City Assembly on Thursday voted no confidence in Dropulic, with 29 votes from the seven-party alliance. Thirteen HDZ councillors were against the no-confidence vote while one Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) councillor abstained. (hina) vm jn 212136 MET mar 96
