The displaced women, who yesterday visited their homes in the
villages of Bilje, Mece, Darda and Ceminac, attended the press
conference. The conference was also attended by the head of the
Office, Ivica Vrkic, and exiled Beli Manastir Mayor Marko Kvesic.
'This is the first opening of the hermetically closed Baranja,
the first step and a good sign that we are not doing this job in
vain', Vrkic said.
'The visit is the result of many incentives and we would like
to thank Mr Klein, Mr Fischer and Mr Corwin who made this visit
possible. We also thank the Serb side, which showed the will to
cooperate', Vrkic said.
He also expressed hope that the Serb side would in the next
couple of days propose to a group of Serb women, who now live in
Baranja, to visit Osijek.
The Croat displaced women spoke about their impressions of the
visit to the occupied Baranja. They stayed shortly in their houses
which now have new occupants. According to the displaced women,
Baranja looked rather desolate.
