According to estimates by military experts, some two to three
million various mines had been laid all over Bosnia-Herzegovina,
but their exact number is hard to establish. It is supposed that
there are about 7,000 mine fields in Bosnia-Herzegovina and only
half of them have been marked properly, General McAfee said.
The greatest difficulty at the moment was a lack of protective
clothing for experts in charge of mine-sweeping as well as a lack
of sensitive mine-detectors. Due to the lack of protective clothing
and mine-detectors, mine-sweeping was being carried out at a very
slow pace, McAfee said, adding that all this called into question
the return of refugees who cannot enter their houses which very
often are located on the very front lines where the majority of
mines had been laid, McAfee said.
