ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - Croatian Transport and Communications
Ministry and the Croatian Railways (HZ) Administration and
Auditing Committee on Tuesday issued a letter in reply to demands
of the negodiating committee of the Croatian Railway Workers' Union
which announced a strike for 22 February. #L#
Only the increase in railway transport could be a basis for
renewing and developing the HZ as well as for raising the workers'
wages, the letter said.
"If there is a strike, it will result in opposite effects,"
the letter said, because the overall rail transport would decrease.
The HZ Workers' Union had demanded a 100 percent rise in
salaries, which was impossible to achieve because wages for railway
workers were taken from the national budget. The amount envisaged
for workers' wages in the budget could not be increased as it would
interfere with the stabilization programme and relations with
international financial institutions, the letter said.
The Transport Ministry is to suggest to the Government that,
based on working results and effectiveness in the first half year,
the amount of money in the State fund be increased, the letter
said.
