The Croatian Association of Independent Workers' Unions (SSSH)
announced to stage a protest against low wages, high and
undeductable taxes and the delay in negotiations about the
collective agreement. Around 3,500 people had been announced to
participate in the protest.
Representatives of the Zagreb Police Administration told
reporters at Tuesday's press conference that (in compliance with
the decision of the Zagreb City Assembly) five sites had been
chosen in Zagreb in case of public gatherings and St. Mark's Square
was not one of them.
Recalling the decision on the prohibition of public
gatherings, the representatives also said that St. Mark's Square
could only hold less than half of the announced number of
protesters and that the gathering would interfere with the traffic
and regular work of institutions in the vicinity of the Square.
The police representatives concluded the press conference by
stating that the head of the SSSH, Dragutin Lesar was acting
against the law and the Zagreb police decision by calling a public
gathering.
