SARAJEVO, Feb 15 (Hina) - Bus traffic between central Sarajevo and
the Serb-held suburb of Ilidza was stopped after two persons were
wounded in yesterday's small-arms attack on a bus travelling
between the two parts of the city.
The municipal authorities wanted additional safety guarantees
before they restored bus-lines between central Sarajevo and Ilidza,
UNHCR spokesman Chris Janowski told a press conference in Sarajevo
today. #L#
The UNHCR had already asked the international Implementation
Force (IFOR) to provide an escort for the buses, but IFOR rejected
the request, saying that it was not part of their mandate. There
were two American IFOR soldiers in the bus that was attacked
yesterday, but IFOR spokesman Thomas Moyer said that they had only
been monitoring the situation.
According to reports from the Sarajevo Police, four bullets
had been fired from small arms on the bus. It was not possible,
however, to carry out the full investigation of the incident since
the Serb police had prevented access even to IFOR representatives.
IFOR spokesman Marc Rayner confirmed that the fire had been
fired from the same place in Ilidza from which it had been opened
on IFOR vehicles on several previous occasions.
