After the talks, which were held behind closed doors, Minister
Jarnjak said that 100 policemen from Croatia would arrive in Mostar
on 10 February. The policemen would be under the command of the EU
Mostar police commissioner, Colonel Pieter Lambrechtse.
The talks also tackled the basic tasks of the Croatian
contingent as well as its structure, Jarnjak said, adding that the
contingent would consist of members of basic police forces and
eight crime investigators.
'Our police would have a mandate in the blue zone, the same as
the EU policemen', Jarnjak said, adding that the Croatian policemen
would be specially trained before they leave for Mostar.
'We have agreed with Mr Koschnik on all issues, and now the
professionals have to do their part of the job', Jarnjak said.
The EU Administrator of Mostar described today's talks with
Croatian Interior Minister as successful, stressing that he had
received President Tudjman's as well as Minister Jarnjak's support.
'We need a unified police force if we are to achieve a unified
Mostar. We need a police force which is professional and which
cares about security. We need team spirit, under Colonel
Lambrechtse's command, on all levels of police work', Koschnik
said.
'No one should be discriminated against', Koschnik said,
adding that the prevention of crime was an international problem,
which did not have borders. One should save his own society, he
added.
Koschnik said that the Croatian offer was very important for
his work in Mostar and the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, adding
that the policemen had to do their part of the job now that the
political leaders had completed theirs.
