REINTEGRATION AND DEADLINE GAMES - VJESNIK COMMENT PIECE

ZAGREB, Feb 2 (Hina) - "What the U.N. Security Council does with its numerous resolutions designed to bring peace to this region often looks like a neverending game," a comment piece in Friday's issue of the Zagreb-based daily of Vjesnik said. "The ground reason for this is that the resolutions do not include deadlines. "The deployment of UNTAES (U.N. transitional administration for eastern Slavonia mission) troops would take as long as until the next summer, and only after that the demilitarization of the occupied eastern Slavonia, Baranja and western Srijem area would start, taking another month. "This extends an overall process of the peaceful reintegration to more than a year, postponing the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced people from the area. "It is quite possible that this delay is yet another form of pressure, in order to make Croatia submit to geopolitical interests of certain Security Council and European Union members," the author says, recalling that Britain, France and Italy keep advocating urgent "reintegration" of Milosevic's Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to European structures. "Croatia has always been fulfilling the international obligations and agreements it had signed, and therefore is entitled to urge the international players to stop playing with the deadlines and to fulfill the resolutions. "Whatever it might look objectionable, not only to the international players but to Croatia proper, only solution at disposal, if the deadlines are not, is the military action. "It is known to everybody, at the moment, that Croatia is capable for that. The option depends on policy change of a part of international community, particularly on the question of whether the game with deadlines is going to stop or not," the piece says.
