SARAJEVO, Jan 9 (Hina) - The international airlift into Sarajevo
was officially closed on Tuesday after three C-130 Hercules
aircraft brought in final supplies of humanitarian aid.
The longest airlift in history helped Sarajevo residents to
survive three and a half years of siege laid by separatist Bosnian
Serb forces.
The effort was launched on 3 July 1992 and 12,951 relief
flights with more than 160,000 tonnes of food and medicine were
conducted.
About 260 attacks on aircraft were carried out. The most
tragic one took place on 2 September 1992 when an Italian G-222
plane was downed by a surface-to-air missile and four crew members
were killed.
