VUKOVAR, Dec 10 (Hina) - Croatian Education Minister Ljilja Vokic
on Wednesday visited a Vukovar high school. She also held talks with
the UNTAES head of Civil Affairs, Gerard Fischer, at the UNTAES base
in Vukovar.
Vokic thanked the UNTAES and he high school teachers for their
contribution to the peaceful reintegration of the Danube river
region of eastern Croatia.
The teachers mentioned the issue of the Serb language and Serb
literature as one of the problems encountered in teaching.
Vokic said that the education ministry had accepted a programme
drafted by the Serbian Cultural Society Prosvjeta, regardless of
doubts surrounding the criteria for including certain authors in
the syllabus.
UNTAES' Fischer said that the education system in eastern Croatia
would continue to be internationally monitored even after UNTAES'
withdrawal.
We strongly believe that you, as teachers and intellectuals, are
the most responsible for the normalization of this area, Fischer
said.
He hoped they would continue to trust both the international
community and the Croatian state.
Education minister Vokic continued her stay in eastern Croatia with
