CRO SUPREME COURT PRESIDENT TO ATTEND STRASBOURG CONFERENCE OF JUDGES

OF JUDGES ( Editorial: --> 7691 ) ZAGREB, Nov 3 (Hina) - The President of Croatian Supreme Court, Milan Vukovic, left for Strasbourg on Sunday where he would participate in an international conference of judges, Vukovic's office said in a statement on Monday. The topic of this year's conference would be constitutional and supreme courts. On Monday and Tuesday, presidents and judges of supreme and constitutional courts of European and western Asian countries will discuss achievements in the reforms of the judiciary in the last five years and consider what should be done to strengthen public confidence in the rule-of-law and the independent judiciary. This is the fifth conference organised by the Washington-based centre for democracy. These conferences have tried to assess a level of the independence of the judiciary in central and eastern European countries and to find out possibilities of improving the independence of the judiciary in those countries. The hosts of the Strasbourg conference are the Council of Europe, the European Commission for Human Rights and the European Court for Human Rights. (hina) jn mš 031020 MET nov 97
