Four trade union associations, including the Croatian
Association of Trade Unions (HUS), the Croatian Association of
Workers' Trade Unions (URSH), the Croatian Confederation of
Independent Trade Unions (KNSH) and the Co-ordination of Croatian
Trade Unions of Public Servants, last Monday called on all Croatian
workers to stop working for five minutes on October 8, as a sign of
support for union demands.
Announcing new actions by the four trade unions, Kunst said he
would try and establish contact with the representatives of the
Croatian Government, so that economic requests of the trade unions
presented in yesterday's action could be discussed.
"The presidents of our four trade unions tried to present our
requests to Premier Matesa yesterday, but he could not receive us,"
said Kunst.
"He should have had five minutes for us and should have showed
symbolic understanding not for our political requests but those
which are of social and economic nature," he said, adding that the
action could have been more successful in Zagreb as well, had there
been more time to prepare it.
HUS President Niko Gunjina estimated that the action was a
success in the whole of Croatia. Towns and counties accepted it in
different ways, but the response in Zagreb was the slowest, he said.
