Taking its cue from October's strong showing at the expiry on Tuesday, prices rose from the opening bell. A mixture of speculative and trade buying was seen, but trade selling capped the gains as March approached 11.71 cents, a 50-percent retracement point from the market's recent downturn. Benchmark March delivery rose 0.13 cent a lb to 11.69 cents, having traded from 11.59 cents to 11.71. May rose 0.08 to 11.76, while the distant months ended 0.05 to 0.06 higher. An estimated 21,731 lots changed hands. Dealers said October's rally into the close yesterday encouraged some fresh trade buying this morning, and helped to whittle away at March's discount to May. "The expiry was seen very constructively," one trader said. Some 187,000 tonnes of Brazilian sugar were delivered against October, with U.S. trade house Cargill accounting for half of the volume. Traders said buy stops were believed to be well-placed above the 11.71-cent level, with subsequent targets seen toward 11.90 cents. If March failed to punch through today's highs it would face support toward 11.60, and then at 11.40. Elsewhere, the market displayed little reaction to the results of the European Union weekly export tender. The EU on Wednesday awarded licenses to export 109,750 tonnes of white sugar, largely in line with expectations. In other physical news, Syria canceled a tender to buy 26,000 tonnes of each white and raw sugar for November delivery. Syrian officials said the tender would be reissued, but no timeline was provided. 021103 MET oct 97
