Recalling the huge contribution of the Croatian police in the
defence of the country, Penic said that the favourable security
conditions and stability of Croatia were reflecting primarily in the
reduction of the overall crime rate by more than 36% since 1993 and
in the improvement of the efficiency rate in discovering criminal
activities, which has reached 75%.
'Croatia is a safe country', Penic said, adding that in 1996,
Croatia had just above 1,300 criminal acts per 100 citizens. That
number was three times higher in some neighbouring countries, Penic
added.
The Interior Ministry is taking special care of security
situation in the Danube river region. The Transitional Police Force
could be reintegrated into the Interior Ministry even before 15
January, said Penic.
Especially good results have been achieved in fighting
organised and white-collar crime, as well as drug-related crime,
Penic said.
Police measures are being harmonised with democratic
principles and standards of the state of law as well as with
guaranteed human rights, the Interior Minister said.
