ZAGREB, Sept 24 (Hina) - We are satisfied with the results of
talks on education issues in the Croatian Danube region, the
president of the state commission for the establishment of
Croatia's constitutional and legal order in the Danube region of
eastern Croatia, Jure Radic, Croatian Education and Sports
Minister Ljilja Vokic and the president of the Joint Council of
Municipalities of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem,
Milos Vojnovic, told reporters after a three-hour meeting held on
Wednesday.
There are no reasons after today's agreements for pupils in
the Croatian Danube region not to attend classes, Radic said,
while Vojnovic pointed out there are no reasons for pupils, their
parents and teachers in the area to be unsatisfied either.
Radic said some 150 elementary school handbooks in the
Serbian language will be printed by late October. Some handbooks
will be delivered next week, he said.
Syllabuses will be worked out in agreement with
representatives of the Serb national community, Radic said.
Education and Sports Minister Vokic will propose to the
government the establishment of a new education network in the
Danube region and will revise the current appointment of
headmasters, Radic said. In schools in which Croatian pupils will
make up the ethnic majority until the end of the year, the
headmaster will be a Croat, while his deputy will be a Serb, and
vice versa, he explained.
In schools where Serbs are in the majority, classes will be
held in the Serbian language for those pupils who state they want
so, while teaching documents will be written in both languages.
"There is no reason why what we agreed on today shouldn't
be carried out", said minister Vokic. "The moratorium on teaching
history will cover the period between 1989 and 1997", she added.
