PARLIAMENTARY PARTIES CONDEMN KILLING OF TWO CROATS IN KORANA

ZAGREB, Sept 17 (Hina) - Croatian parliamentary parties on Wednesday condemned the killing of two Croats in the village of Korana on Saturday, appealing to Croats to refrain from any acts of revenge. "We condemn this crime as any other; violence and intolerance lead to such unfortunate events. "We call on the authorities of the Republic of Croatia to take all steps in line with the Constitution and law to shed light on this unfortunate event. "We appeal to all Croatian citizens to exercise restraint and tolerance and to refrain from revenge in order to contribute to the stability, well-being and peace in our country. "We appeal to representatives of the international community to contribute with their objectivity and impartiality to establishing civic confidence in the Republic of Croatia as well as to a lasting and stable peace in Bosnia-Herzegovina," they said in a joint statement. The statement was signed by the Croatian Democratic Union, the Social Democratic Party, the Croatian Social Liberal Party, the Croatian Party of Rights, the Istrian Democratic Party, the Club of National Minorities, the Serb Independent Democratic Party, the Croatian Christian Democratic Union, the Initiative for establishing a Serb National Congress and the Serb National Party. Marijan Ferdeber, aged 38, of Smoljanac and Mile Valentic, aged 32, of Zagreb were killed on Saturday night in the village of Korana near Rakovica, about 100 km south of Zagreb, by two men, identified by police as M.H., aged 45, and R.H., aged 50, both of Rakovica, who later admitted to the murder. Ferdeber and Valentic went on a fishing trip on Saturday evening. On their way to the Korana river they passed through the yard of the home of the two men, one of whom asked why they were passing by their house so late at night, which resulted in an argument. On their way back, Ferdeber and Valentic came across an obstacle put up by M.H. and R.H., after which they were brutally killed by a blunt instrument and a firearm, a police statement said. Police were alerted by telephone by a night watchman at the Korana campsite, who had been told about the murder by one of the perpetrators. (hina) vm jn 171834 MET sep 97
