In his address to reporters following today's meeting on
the removal of mines in Vukovar, Baric said that the process of
mine-clearing in the area was proceeding without casualties or
technical problems. Another 200 workers would be employed and two
more machines for the removal of mines would be purchased in the
autumn, Baric said.
It was agreed at today's meeting that a plan for the
removal of mines in Vukovar area should be organised. According
to current data, there are six mine fields in the town, but many
other surfaces should be checked due to a danger of scattered
mines or other explosive devices which have not gone off, Baric
said.
The town water supply system and gas pipeline Vukovar-
Negoslavci should be cleared of mines first, so that their
reconstruction could be carried out.
The removal of mines from the 110-kilovolt transmission
line Vinkovci-Vukovar is in its final stage and should be
completed in some 20 days, Baric said.
Baric said he hoped that the government would find the
money needed for the removal of mines from agricultural areas in
the reconstructed villages in the Danube river region, to which
the displaced were already returning.
