PRINCESS OF WALES COMPLETES HER VISIT TO BOSNIA

SARAJEVO, Aug 10 (Hina) - British princess Diana on Sunday completed her three-day visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina, aimed at contributing to a campaign of clearing numerous mines left unexploded after the war throughout BH, with a visit to a UN mine removal centre (MAC) in Sarajevo. Upon arriving in Sarajevo, after visiting Tuzla and Travnik, Lady Di was welcomed by UN Secretary General's special envoy for BH Kai Eide, while MAC representatives acquainted her with the centre's work and problems encountered in mine-clearing. According to estimates of UN experts, more than 35,000 mine-fields remained in Bosnia after the end of the conflict, with exact data gathered for 17,854 of them. The task of the UN mine removal centre is to coordinate activities in the clearing of mines by gathering data and providing courses for experts-to-be in the matter. The MAC has however encountered considerable financial difficulties. Of the USD 23 million required for its work this year, only seven has been ensured. Due to donors' unwillingness to assist, the MAC managed to ensure courses for only 120, instead of the planned 1,200 mine- clearing experts. Before visiting the UN mine removal centre in Bosnia's capital, princess Diana visited one of the most isolated parts of Sarajevo, Buc-potok, where in the immediate vicinity of a rubbish dump, lives the six-member family of Mirzeta Gabelic, a 15-year- old girl who was the victim of a concealed mine. While heading for the market in February, Mirzeta stepped on a mine in the district of Stup and was deprived of her right shin. The princess of Wales, who was accompanied by Roberto Markys, a Jesuit priest who with Caritas collects help for those who were similarly injured, talked with Mirzeta, her three brothers, and their parents, behind closed doors, as she had done elsewhere during her visit to BH.
