ZAGREB, Aug 15 (Hina) - The number of casualties in road
accidents in Croatia has dropped thanks to the increased control
of traffic by police in the last few months as part of a country-
wide effort called "Operation Weekend".
Three persons were killed in car crashes last weekend and
six the weekend before that. However, the number of casualties
remained high: 45 persons were seriously injured and 92 lightly.
Police stepped up control on Thursday in anticipation of
heavier traffic on Friday when Croatia celebrates the Roman
Catholic holiday of Assumption.
Last weekend, police registered a total of 11,930 traffic
violations throughout the country, of which 1,439 were committed
by foreign drivers. Most of the violations referred to exceeding
the speed limit.
