SARAJEVO, Aug 12 (Hina) - Representatives of Croats, Bosniaks (Muslims)
and international organizations acting in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday
reached an agreement to make it possible for all Bosniak refugees, who
after incidents in the Jajce area (central BH) earlier this month abandoned
their homes, to return by the end of this week, a spokesman for the UN High
Commission for Refugees, Kris Janowski, told reporters in Sarajevo.
At a meeting held in Travnik yesterday, Croat officials of the Central
Bosnia Canton and the Municipality of Jajce agreed to guarantee full
security to the returnees, Janowski said, but pointed out there was little
probability a large number of people would return immediately. According to
Janowski, they were still scared and it was difficult to expect more than 30
would come back by the end of the week.
Janowski said UNHCR had been informed that the town of Lukavac
in north-eastern Bosnia could soon become part of the "open cities" project,
since the town's leaders expressed willingness to allow the refugees' return.
The Mayor of Lukavac agreed to the return of 92 Bosnian Serbs to
two villages in the municipality and assured UNHCR representatives full
security would be guaranteed. Authorities in Lukavac also mentioned the
possibility of including Serb returnees in the local police, which, according +
to
Janowski, corroborated the mentioned guarantee.
