WESTENDORP WILLING TO ASK FOR EXTENSION OF HIS AUTHORITY

SARAJEVO, July 18 (Hina) - The high representative for the implementation of the Dayton Accord in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Carlos Westendorp, on Friday said the international community will continue with economic pressure on the three sides in BH in order to make them meet the undertaken commitments. In case the current situation continued, more decisive measures would be proposed, he added. After a meeting in Sarajevo with members of the Administration Committee for the implementation of the peace accord, Westendorp told reporters the international community was dissatisfied with the degree of implementation of the Dayton Accord provisions achieved to date, but with the Sintra conclusions as well. He in particular mentioned the attitude of Bosnian Serb authorities. Those who fail to fulfil their obligations will bear the consequences, said Westendorp, and we are determined to consistently condition the allocation of economic assistance, he added. The international community insists the crisis in the Serb entity be solved through dialogue and peacefully, and it condemns the proceedings of the Pale-controlled media and those of the Bosnian Serb police, which have lately caused tension and destabilized the situation, Westendorp said. A decisive action will be undertaken against the Pale media in the following days if they continue with their anti-Dayton policy, he added. If no significant progress is made in the next three or four months, Westendorp said he would propose a change of the high representative's mandate, since his current authority, as he recalled, is such that it cannot efficiently compensate for the non-implementation of the Dayton Accord, for which the three signatory-sides are responsible.
