KLEIN APPOINTED TO BE DEPUTY TO HIGH REPRESENTATIVE IN BOSNIA

PALE, July 2 (Hina) - U.S. General Jacques Klein, who is UN Transitional Administrator of the Croatian Danube area, will be a new deputy to the international community's High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina. A spokesman for the High Representative's office, Simon Haselock described the appointment of Gen. Klein, which will be announced also in the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, as the response of the U.S. Administration to the request of the High Representative, Spanish Carlos Westendorp, that his first deputy should be a man who has experience in the region. Westendorp was very satisfied with Klein's appointment, Haselock said at a news conference at Pale, outside Sarajevo, on Wednesday. Westendorp issued a statement on this occasion saying that he greeted warmly the joining of Klein to his staff. In the statement, the Spanish diplomat praised Klein for excellent job the U.S. general had done in eastern Slavonia. Gen. Klein will succeed a German diplomat, Michael Steiner, as the First Deputy to the High Representative. (hina) jn mš 021350 MET jul 97
