UN spokesman in Sarajevo Aleksandar Ivanko said the situation in
Jusici had deteriorated after the Bosnian Serb police had arrested a
Bosniac (Moslem) on Thursday, which had caused great dissatisfaction of
the local population.
Serb police had arrived to take Mesud Islamovic to court in Zvornik
in eastern Bosnia, which he did not resist at first. Later, however, he
physically attacked three police officers, beating one up, breaking
another's finger and the third one's rib.
His wife joined him in the assault and stoned the police vehicle,
shattering the windshield.
According to Ivanko, Islamovic had only then been handcuffed, and
described the overall conduct of the police toward him as correct.
Islamovic is currently in prison in Zvornik and will be indicted
for physical assault of police officers.
All Bosniacs who had lived in Jusici before the war had been exiled
from their homes, but had returned after pressure had been exerted on
Bosnian entity authorities last year.
