NEW YORK, Nov 17 (Hina)- Croatia's Ambassador to the United
Nations, Ivan Simonovic, on Tuesday commented on the UN Security
Council Resolution of Nov 17, binding the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia to cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal
for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
"The three officers of the former JNA (Mrksic, Sljivancanin and
Radic), indicted for crimes against the wounded who had been
hospitalised at the Vukovar hospital, are being cornered. The FRY
will be on the agenda of the UN Security Council until the criminal
troika appears in The Hague", Simonovic stated.
According to Simonovic, "pressure against Belgrade will be
mounting and could even include sanctions". This can be concluded
from the fact that the Resolution falls under Chapter VII of the UN
Charter, he added.
Simonovic also pointed out that "the ICTY and Croatian authorities
have for quite some time now been calling for more forceful measures
regarding the arrest of the three JNA officers". He said he
regretted that the Council had not reacted earlier and thus
demonstrated its firm commitment to the Tribunal.
The FRY's consistent non-cooperation with the Tribunal "has
brought into question the Tribunal's rationale. A tribunal that is
not trying those who committed crimes during the aggression against
Croatia is neither just nor helpful in the establishment of trust",
Simonovic concluded.
