and development of Croatia is to be held in the first week of
December 1998, Croatian Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa said in Zagreb
on Tuesday after a meeting with representatives of the
international community.
"Today's meeting confirmed that conditions for holding the
conference for the reconstruction and development of Croatia had
been met," Matesa said.
He expressed conviction that the holding of the conference would
contribute to the implementation of the programme of return and the
reconstruction plan.
The Croatian government drew up the documents of the programme of
return and reconstruction plan in tight cooperation with the main
factors of the international community, keeping in sight the basic
constitutional principles on the equality of all citizen of
Croatia, Matesa said.
"The conference will expedite both the return and reconstruction,
and contribute to the economic development of Croatia, and along
with it, the well-being of all who live in it," he added.
We are satisfied with the progress achieved so far in the process of
return and we are looking forward to the conference on the
reconstruction and development of Croatia, US Ambassador to
Croatia, William Montgomery, said.
The European Union will take part at the conference if the Croatian
government fulfils its commitments from the programme of return and
reconstruction plan, Austrian Ambassador to Croatia, Rudolf
Bogner, read a statement on behalf of the EU.
The EU expects Croatian government representatives and
international community's leading legal experts to hold meetings
at which solutions for open legal issues that the Croatian
government must resolve as soon as possible, Bogner said.
The EU stressed that its participation at the conference would not
in any way prejudge its future assessment on the implementation of
the Croatian government's programme of return and plan of
reconstruction, he added.
The EU would continue constructive dialogue with the Croatian
government on the programme of return and reconstruction plan.
