PRESIDENT TUDJMAN OPENS CONSTRUCTION WORK ON DUBROVNIK BRIDGE

( Editorial: --> 7258 ) RIJEKA DUBROVACKA, Oct 9 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on Friday afternoon opened the construction works of the Dubrovnik Bridge by laying a cylinder containing a charter with information about the bridge into the bridge's foundation structure. The bridge will run over the Ombla river delta from Rijeka Dubrovacka (a town near Dubrovnik, south Adriatic), and will shorten the trip to Dubrovnik by about 12 kilometres. This great enterprise is also proof of the Government's decisiveness to solve all life problems of Croatia, Tudjman said. The 481 metre-long and 52 metre-tall bridge worth DM37million is expected to be completed by the middle of 2001. The constructors are Germany's Walter Bau company and Split-based Konstruktor. Congratulating the architects and constructors, Tudjman stressed that this bridge will connect Dubrovnik with the rest of Croatia, but also Croatia with the rest of the world. This bridge, which we are constructing with our friends from Bavaria, is the best answer to those who claim that this government does not care about integrating into Europe, Tudjman said. Recalling that the construction of a highway will be started soon in the Zagreb area, Tudjman said that the highway will also enable integration with western countries, including the United States, but will also connect parts of Croatia. This government, he said, is the government of the Croatian people which takes care about the interests of the Croatian people. We must, however, be aware of the fact that we have only just come out of a debilitating war and Greater-Serbian aggression which had a particular impact on the Dubrovnik area. Despite this, Tudjman stressed, Croatia has managed to stabilise financially and politically. We have imposed ourselves upon the world, it has accepted us, including those who had not wanted an independent Croatia. We have won political, diplomatic and military battles which surprised the world. For the first time, Croats did not fight against each other, and we proved that without us, nothing can be done in this region, but also, that we will not submit to the will of others, Tudjman stressed. We have taken our fate in our own hands, and we shall not let it go any more. Croatia will be as we make it ourselves, Tudjman concluded. Present at the opening were also Reconstruction and Development Minister Jure Radic, director of the Croatian Roads Administration, Aleksandar Caklovic, Walter Bau's director Joerg Eschenbach, Dubrovnik's Mayor Vido Bogdanovic, and the Government's Commissioner for the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Luka Siljeg.
