B'NEI B'RITH OFFICIAL EXPECTS SAKIC'S TRIAL TO BE CORRECT

( Editorial: --> 2845 ) BELGRADE, Aug 10 (Hina) - Assistant director of the B'nei B'rith organisation, George Specter, expects the trial of the former Jasenovac concentration camp commander, Dinko Sakic, to be in line with international law, Belgrade's daily "Danas" said in Monday's issue. Specter especially stressed in the interview that a differentiation should be made between the Croatian state of today and the Croatian state of World War II. People of the Croatian government have convinced me that the proceedings against Dinko Sakic will be conducted in line with the law and international standards of justice. We have no reason not to believe Mr. Granic and doubt that Croatia would conduct this trial as it should be conducted. After all, there is international pressure for this case to be fairly closed, Specter said. He stressed that there are so far no objections on the course of the trial. There appears to be no violation of procedure. Since the extradition we have been following the case and we have no doubt that everything is legal, which means that we will have no objections unless the conduct of the Croatian court and officials change. Specter said it was good that the trial is taking place in Zagreb. This is an opportunity for Croatia to distance itself from the Ustasha movement, he added. It would be an interesting situation if Nada Sakic, Sakic's wife, is extradited to the court in Belgrade, he said. We would have competitive trials in two opposed regimes. There are suspicions that Nada Sakic, as an old and ill woman, would receive sympathy in Zagreb, and thus, it may be better if she is put on trial in Belgrade, Specter said. We would not favour their current conditions and age to veil the truth, he added. (hina) lml 101418 MET aug 98
