Seafarers union on models for protection of ships in piracy high risk areas

RIJEKA, Sept 9 (Hina) - The Croatian Seafarers Union (SPH) is not against armed escorts of vessels sailing under the Croatian flag or against changes of legislation aimed at allowing that armed security guards embark on ships as they enter piracy high risk areas, however, the trade union believes that the engagement of armed guards who are not Croatian soldiers or police can heighten the risk of violence, the union's leader, Predrag Brazzoduro, said at a news conference in Rijeka on Friday.

The risks will be heightened "due to differences in rules on the use of force and arms which exist between state and non-state participants", the unionist said.

In response to questions from the press about which protective measures the trade union preferred, Brazzoduro said that vessels should be physically protected by wire or water cannons, they should manoeuvre in order to avoid pirates and merchant ships should sail in convoy or enjoy the protection of navy vessels.

According to the Croatian Seafarers Union's figures, currently 32 ships with 760 crew members aboard are in the hands of pirates.

International security companies charge the protection of the vessel, crew and cargo per trip between 30,000-60,0000 US dollars.
