OFFICIAL PROGRAMME OF POPE'S VISIT TO CROATIA ANNOUNCED

( Editorial: --> 8086 ) ZAGREB, July 16 (Hina) - The papal nuncio's office in Croatia, the Croatian Bishops' Conference and the Committee for the Pope's Visit on Thursday announced the official programme of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Croatia. The Pope's pastoral and state visit to Croatia will take place from October 2 to 4, 1998. The Holy Father will visit Zagreb, the shrine of Marija Bistrica, Split and Solin. The Pope is expected to arrive at Zagreb Pleso airport at 5.30pm on Friday, October 2, where he will be welcomed by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, papal nuncio Msgr. Giulio Einaudi and members of the Croatian Bishops' Conference Permanent Council. On Saturday, October 3, at 9.45am, a eucharistic ceremony will start in Marija Bistrica during which the Pontiff will beatify late Cardinal Stepinac. On the same day, at 5.15pm, the Pope will visit the Croatian President. On Sunday, October 4, the Holy Father will visit Split where in the afternoon he will hold a holy mass, to begin at 10.45am. At 1.45pm, the Pope will pay a short visit to the town centre, which is celebrating its 1700th anniversary. In the afternoon, he will visit the oldest Croatian shrine of the Mother of God - Our Lady of the Island in Solin. The Holy Father and President Tudjman will then hold speeches at Split airport, from where the Pontiff will leave for Rome at 7.30pm. Members of the Croatian Bishops' Conference spoke at today's press conference about preparations for the Pope's visit and the beatification of Cardinal Stepinac. "By declaring the God's servant Alojzije Stepinac a martyr, the Holy Father confirms the God's servant himself, his work in difficult times and his support for the Catholic Church which looked up to him while he was alive and now gathers around his grave," Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanic said adding the beatification meant the end of an era - the era of Communism. "We have now in front of us the first martyr from the time of Communism who will be beatified," Bozanic said. (hina) jn rml 162107 MET jul 98
