VATICAN, June 29 (Hina/AR) - Pope John Paul II on Monday presented
Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanic and 15 other archbishops with
pallia, on the occasion of the Day of Saints Peter and Paul.
The pallium is a symbol of papal authority and to present an
archbishop with a pallium means to recognise his share in papal
authority.
It is a narrow wool band with six black crosses, which is attached to
liturgical robes.
Before it is presented to an archbishop, the pallium rests on Saint
Peter's grave.
After they are presented with pallia, archbishops kneel before the
Pope and whisper a few words with him.
The other 15 archbishops presented today with pallia are from
Italy, Albania, Hungary (Europe), North America, South America,
Asia and Africa.
Only four archbishops who were given this symbol of metropolitan
honour are from cardinal seats - Zagreb, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and
Santiago de Chile, which has been interpreted as a sign that Bozanic
could soon become a cardinal.
