ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - Eight Croatian customs and police officers
have received high praise for their role in exposing one of the
biggest drugs hauls in Europe.
Earlier this week at the Zagreb customs post the officers
discovered and confiscated a shipment containing 16.5 tonnes of
marijuana.
For their efforts the officers were awarded with "Exceptional
Enterprise" medals by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on
Thursday.
Congratulating the officers on their success, President Tudjman
said the action was the most successful effort this year in
uncovering the "evil which jeopardises normal social development
of society and civilisation today".
The shipment, intercepted two days ago, was the largest quantity of
smuggled drugs discovered in Europe so far this year.
"This success is worthy of special attention and it is with extra
satisfaction that I can congratulate you on this success in the name
of the state leadership and award you these "Exceptional
Enterprise" medals on the recommendation of your superiors,"
President Tudjman told the Interior Ministry and Customs Service
employees.
Finance Minister Borislav Skegro and Interior Minister Ivan Penic
thanked the President for the awards on behalf of their employees.
Penic said Croatia gave its full support to the world-wide fight
against drugs.
He recalled that last year more than 557kg of cocaine had been
seized by Croatian police, while this year more than 10 tonnes of
marijuana and heroin had been seized in Zagreb and Trieste with the
cooperation Italian and Slovenian police.
Those receiving the "Exceptional Enterprise" medals included: the
Zagreb Police Drugs Department head Zoran Babic and his crime
prevention chief officer Zeljko Bertovic, Anti-Smuggling
Department head Igor Vulje, customs officers Nikola Brekalo and
Damir Kardum, Customs Service director Josip Knezic and the head
and deputy head of the Zagreb customs post, Jankomir Zeljko Kralj
and Zlatko Grabar.
