3 more Roma settlements in Croatia connected to municipal infrastructure

CAKOVEC, Sept 7 (Hina) - A ceremony was held on Wednesday in three settlements of ethnic Roma in northern Croatia -- Piskorovec, Pribislavec and Loncarevo -- after they were connected to the public water and power supply systems and their roads were asphalted. The project was worth 3.4 million euros, with the European Union providing 75% of the funding and the Croatian government the rest.

Addressing the ceremony, the head of the government's office for national minorities, Branko Socanac, said provision of public utilities to those settlements meant turning a new page in the life of their residents.

Within this project, the fourth Roma settlement, Parag, was previously connected to the public utilities system.

Socanac announced similar projects for other Roma settlements.

According to the latest census, the eight Roma settlements in Medjimurje County have 6,000 inhabitants, making up five percent of the population of this northernmost county.
