Croatian FM attends informal EU ministerial meeting in Poland

ZAGREB, Sept 3 (Hina) - Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic on Saturday participated in a semi-annual informal meeting of foreign ministers from EU member and candidate countries in Sopot, Poland, and this was Croatia's first attendance at the Gymnich summit after the country concluded the European Union accession negotiations earlier this summer.

According to a press release issued by the Croatian foreign ministry, Jandrokovic held a series of bilateral meetings on the fringes of the meeting and thanked his interlocutors for their countries' support to Croatia in the finalisation of the EU entry negotiations. Jandrokovic's talks with his counterparts from EU member-states also focused on the forthcoming activities of Croatia towards the signing of Croatia's EU accession treaty in late November or in early December, the subsequent ratification of the document and towards Croatia's full membership in the European bloc.

Jandrokovic pledged Croatia's readiness to meet obligations stemming from the membership in the European Union and expressed satisfaction with the ability of Croatia to be more actively engaged in the shaping and pursuance of the EU joint foreign policy in the future.

The summit focused on the situation in the south of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, with emphasis on the historic changes in the Arab world, and on relations with strategic partners. One of the topics was the current situation in the EU's southern and eastern neighbourhood and the EU's joint efforts to support democratic transformation processes in those countries.

As for the current situation in Libya, Jandrokovic expressed hope that upon the final fall of the Gaddafi regime, the democratic forces would start building a new state that will provide equal rights and equal opportunities for all citizens of Libya.

He said that Croatia was willing to participate in the reconstruction of the post-conflict Libya, having in mind Croatia's experience in the construction of post-conflict institutions, humanitarian de-mining and medical assistance.

Croatia has also recognised the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people who Jandrokovic said deserved the wide and undivided support. He recalled that Croatia joined in the European Union's calls on President Bashar al-Assad to step down, and he pointed out the importance of the engagement of the international community in efforts to put an and to the violence in that Arab country.

The Gymnich summit is held twice a year in the countries that are current EU chairs.

The summit was named after the Gymnich Castle near Bonn where the first informal meeting of EU foreign ministers was held in 1974.
