ZAGREB, June 12 (Hina) - Croatian primary and high school teachers
and professors on Friday began a strike due to their
dissatisfaction with their financial situation.
The strike was organised by six school unions which requested of the
government to increase teachers' salaries by promoting all school
employees for two salary classes as of June 1, and that 2,392 kuna
(about DM665) of compensation be paid to them by the summer
vacations.
According to union leaders, the strike will continue until the
requests are met.
The government at Thursday's session decided that classes in
primary and high schools end on Friday and that students be able to
improve their grades through next week.
The general strike follows two one-day strikes of warning which
were organised by the Union of Croatian Teachers' and the
Independent Union of Employees in Croatian High Schools on May 20
and June 4.
