TWO SCHOOL UNIONS ANNOUNCE SECOND DAY-LONG STRIKE FOR THUR

( Editorial: --> 8638 ) ZAGREB, June 3 (Hina) - The Croatian Teachers' Union and the Independent Union of High School Employees will stage a day-long strike on Thursday. The two unions demand that the government increase their salaries. Representatives of the said two, and four other school employee unions, on Wednesday held talks with representatives of the Ministry of Education. All unions will by Friday be acquainted with the Education Ministry's stand concerning negotiations on a new wage category classification and compensation pay-out, Education Ministry representatives said. The four minority unions agreed with this in principle, but the two majority unions assessed today's talks as "buying time". The two unions organised a day-long strike on May 20. Today they confirmed that on Thursday they would stage a new one demanding "fair salaries" and called on other unions to join them. The two unions also said further strikes were possible. This would bring the conclusion of the school year into question. Classes will end June 19 as planned, Education Minister Bozidar Pugelnik told a brief press conference given at the reporters' insistence. There will be no general strike, he said. Pugelnik told parents to send their children to school tomorrow and told headmasters they were committed under the Constitution to ensure that classes be held. (hina) ha/bag jn 031855 MET jun 98
