ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - The Association of Croatian Workers'
Unions (URSH) claims Thursday's Croatian Government decision to
end this school year on Friday, June 12, was unconstitutional.
The union peak body will continue to support teachers in their
requests, the most important being an increase in salaries and
payment of a holiday cash grant.
The Government's decision to declare the teachers' strike illegal
and block the work of schools on Friday is actually the expression
of deep disrespect for the Croatian Constitution which guarantees
the right to strike, URSH said.
It is a shame that salaries of professors and teachers have not
reached the average salary of 2,540 kuna, the URSH said expressing
concern with the fact that the Government "jeopardises pupils'
results in this school year" and "shows no understanding for the
profession which is the basis of every society".
