CROATIAN FAMILY RECEIVES RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE NATIONS MEDAL

( Editorial: --> 7623 ) ZAGREB, May 29 (Hina) - Vice President of the Jewish Community in Zagreb, Igor Francetic, presented a "Righteous Among the Nations" medal to Mrs Marija Cibilic, daughter of the late Karlo and Marija Car. Righteous Among the Nations is the highest honour the state of Israel and the Jewish people in the world can bestow upon a non-Jew. The Holocaust Memorial Museum Yad Vashem from Jerusalem delivers this high award to people who risked their lives to save Jews during the Second World War. Among the thousands decorated by a medal and a plaque of the Righteous Among the Nations worldwide there have been more than 50 Croats. The now awarded Car family was hiding a Jewish family throughout the spring of 1942 in their home in Zagreb. The Weisses left Osijek, fleeing from the racial laws of the Ustasha regime. The family was nominated for this high award by Ivan Weiss, a boy at the time, who died last year. (hina) jn jfk/bag 292303 MET may 98
