INTERNATIONAL REPS INTRODUCE ADDITIONAL MEASURES IN DRVAR

( Editorial: --> 7517 ) SARAJEVO, April 17 (Hina) - Heads of international organisations in Bosnia-Herzegovina have decided to take additional measures which should normalise the situation in Drvar (western Bosnia), where two Serbs, who returned recently, were killed early Wednesday morning. High Representative in Bosnia-Herzegovina Carlos Westendorp has replaced Drvar deputy mayor Drago Tokmakcija and forbidden him to run for any office in the forthcoming September elections. Meanwhile, head of the UN Mission in Bosnia, Elizabeth Rehn, changed her earlier decision on the suspension of Drvar's police superintendent and the canton interior minister into an order on their dismissal. Wednesday's killing of two Drvar Serbs is only the culmination of the continual intimidation of people who are returning to the town, the High Representative told a press conference in Sarajevo on Friday. Westendorp added that the Croatian authorities could do a lot in securing the unimpeded continuation of the peace process. Rehn said she had asked the President and Vice-President of the Croat-Muslim Federation to see that 15 police officers of Serb nationality be employed with the Drvar police within 48 hours. If this is not done I will ask the High Representative to appoint a temporary supervisor for Drvar police, who will then implement this decision, Rehn said. The situation in Drvar is not calming down, she said, adding it was reported that new houses were set afire this morning. General Hew Pike, Stabilisation Force (SFOR) deputy commander, confirmed today that additional SFOR soldiers were sent to Drvar at the request of the International Police Task Force (IPTF) command. They would be assisted by helicopters, Pike said. The European Union today strongly condemned yesterday's killing of the two Bosnian Serbs. A statement released today by the European Union office in Sarajevo said that the "abhorrent murder" should not threaten the return of refugees to Drvar. (hina) mm rm /mb 171836 MET apr 98
