VUKOVAR, March 20 (Hina) - The work of police in the Croatian Danube
River region is satisfactory, and in some parts excellent, Interior
Minister Ivan Penic said on Friday in Vukovar.
He emphasised that the security situation in every instance was not
a reason for Serbs leaving the Danube region.
Penic was in Vukovar on Friday to participate in a meeting of Police
Sector department heads. Following the meeting, Ministry of the
Interior (MUP) representatives held a press conference.
In answer to journalists' questions on whether the police had at
their disposal correct information on the number of departing
Serbs, Assistant Interior Minister Josko Moric said the MUP did not
have such figures.
On claims by Serb representatives about alleged regular
disappearances of Serbs in the Croatian Danube region, Moric said
he knew of only one case.
This involved a person who engaged in the disposal of counterfeit
foreign currency, disappeared from the Danube region with a
passport and, which a criminal investigation confirmed, was last
seen in Yugoslavia.
